I feel like the title of this book misrepresents its content. What I thought I was purchasing were some techniques and methods on parenting by a psychologist. Instead I felt like I was reading an editorial piece on the U.S. maternity leave and daycare.I'm giving the book more than one star because I agree with a lot of things she says (of course I think the US should have a better maternity policy and that you should listen to your kid). And it was interesting to read about other cultures, even if she didn't necessarily convince me why their approaches are better for long term effects. However, I felt she overly idealized some cultures and made some leaps in logic. For instance, I felt that she implied daycare is the reason for mass shootings nowadays. Interesting concept, but not really a strategy for raising a child or something that is helpful to me as a parent right now.The biggest problem I had with this book is her footnotes. After one particular "fact" that I read, I clicked on the footnote to look at the reference. I expected to be led to a study on PubMed, but instead it was a NPR broadcast. She even has Wikipedia as a reference. I feel that it's quite misleading to present "facts" without references to peer reviewed studies.I would certainly not recommend this book to another parent. To me, the author was on a soapbox about certain issues and did not deliver on the title or synopsis.

As a man wanting to one day be a father, I found the experiences and lessons shared in The Mindful Parent invaluable. I too have traveled quite a bit in an effort to understand various ways of living and creating families. While my unprofessional observations were not near as detailed as Dr. Peterson's, I definitely agree with her that there are golden nuggets in the peaceful cultures and it was wonderful to read the conclusions and thoughts of someone who has dedicated her life to treating patients and helping them overcome difficulties related to early childhood experiences. The book reinforced in me the special importance of a child's early life in a way that sounds possible for me to carry out when I have children.

Excellent Resource for all!Easy to read and understand no matter who you are or why you've selected this book. I wish everyone would read this book because it explains the importance of attachment, especially from birth (even pre-birth) to at least age three. Critical stages in one's human development. Even the Dalai Lama has quoted this book and endorsed the author stating "the critical period of brain development from the time of birth up to at least the age of three or four, during which time loving physical contact is the single most important factor for the normal growth of the child."The author has clearly researched this entire book, to the tune of more than 20 pages of scientific evidence based research references in the back. In fact, some of the references are great to read as well. It's obvious she has been a practicing psychologist for decades, traveled the world and is passionate about the importance of raising kind, mindful children to positively impact our entire world. The book includes simple, practical tools that will increase attachment between parents and children, ultimately creating healthy, loving humans as a result. The examples from her global travels are insightful and fun to read, which demonstrates the significance of why healthy attachment is important, and essential in human development. The tools and things Dr. Peterson encourages in her book are easy to implement no matter where in the world one resides and regardless of socio-economic status. If one is not a parent, this book is a great resource because it might help explain how come a person behaves, thinks or feels a certain way as they grow into adulthood, or maybe are having issues in attaching in an intimate relationship. Eye opening! Brilliant read that is extensively researched!

As a first time mama with very little baby experience, this book has been a real gift. In our society that seems focused on various types of baby training and conforming babies to our lifestyles, this book really helped support my own maternal instincts. Everything Dr. Peterson writes about resonated with my heart. I want to nurture and love my wee babe; not force him to conform to my busy American life. This book really validated my beliefs. And I was so inspired by the beautiful stories of how peaceful cultures truly cherish their young. Babies and children are blessings not burdens. Thank you Dr. Peterson for helping me find my way and follow my heart.

Great book except for the fact that chapter 3 is missing...pages 32-56 were missing and then another part resduplicated. Other friends bought book in a book store and had NO issues..

Great book very impressive how far behind we are on our society. We have a lot to do on our homes! Thanks for the book!

Amazing! Loving every page and using it daily

Slightly better than her other book. I suppose it is possible that a person going through similar issues may find some help here. She overcame bulimia and substance abuse to become a married mother. She thought she had it all together until she learned her husband had been repeatedly unfaithful for years. It hurt like hell. She happened to see a home improvement show on tv where a house needed to be torn apart and get new wiring installed. She made the analogy to herself and her marriage. She went to therapy, she went to yoga, she went to the beach. She realized she believes in a higher power. She eventually got back together with her husband, but it seems they are now divorcing and she is with a female partner. I have nothing against any of it, it just didn't make a very good book. Not much advice here on dealing with any of the above issues. I wish her well.

I tried, I really tried, but at about the midpoint of this book I started skipping so many pages I finally just succumbed to my truth and let it go.I am well aware that this a good writer, an excellent writer, and I do understand the genre of "survivor memoirs" and their ability to inspire and empower those for whom the narrative resonates. But for whatever reason, the style of the writing, with its almost breezy stripping of the writer's every thought, making each one as important and essential whether talking about yoga or alcoholism, became wearying to me. The sheer minute-by-minute-by-minute-by-minute account of the writer's marriage and the revelations that arose from it (and other revelation-inducing life events) became wearying to me as a reader. I left her sometime during the yoga section and left without knowing whether or not she and her husband ever had sex again or ever decided to give it a real go again -- and I feel sorta bad about that, as, no doubt, much went into this life and this book -- I just found the mountain of details wore me down too much to care.I'm sorry to leave this review because I applaud anyone who transcends their demons to find a new and more self-preserving life. But maybe I've read too much of this genre at this point. Maybe the revelations and epiphanies that fascinated this writer to the point of microscopic examination have already been covered in other fine books I've read. I dunno. All I know is, she lost me along the way.I wish her well, however it went, and congratulate her on both the success of her life and, is seems, this book. From what I can see it's having quite an impact and that's a good thing.

A friend suggested this book, so I downloaded a sample. I read it and it felt like every word described my childhood. My experiences on how to behave...how to display beauty and intelligence when interacting with others.I was curious about the author and started reading reviews prior to downloading reviews. Some praised her and related to her, others dropped off at passages where they felt she was too (insert adjective). Some labeled her a false prophet, some a spiritual guide.I almost didn’t read this book because of one of those labels. One that I just couldn’t identify with at all.But I read on. At times, I thought this woman is a beautiful writer. Her imagery is crisp, uniquely hers, forceful and superb. At other times I felt she was shallow or putting others in boxes as it related to her grief, her experiences, and I couldn’t relate at all. I thought about stopping. But I read on,and realized that she was baring her soul. Opening herself up to criticism and attack on many levels—as a person, a parent, a spouse, a spiritual being, a woman, a feminist, and whatever role or label the reader wanted to ascribe or judge her on.Did I relate to everything she said. Absolutely not. How could I? It’s her experience. Could I relate to some things? Absolutely.Baring your soul is brave. Allowing others to glimpse the lesson that you took from a situation is courageous. And I realized that it was not that she was a guru or guide instructing us how to be, act or feel, but relaying her experiences, how she dealt with them reacted, and re-evaluated her behavior as time passed. So I can’t judge her or find fault if I don’t relate, but I can listen learn and grow from what she has shared with me in her own personal journey. We are all on our own journey, and it is beautiful and painful for many of us. By baring her faults and foibles as well as her successes, she affords you the opportunity to take with you a message, the knowledge that as humans none of us have a perfect life or experiences. There will be good and bad. You will be challenged to find grace is devastating situations, to celebrate the successes of others when you are flailing. And when you are not flailing, when you have grace, you can walk with someone through parts of their journey.

Beautiful, touching book. As a woman who has had plenty of body image and intimacy issues, i related to the entire thing. Every time i put the book down, I left with a desire to hold, kiss, and thank my significant other for being in my life despite everything we have overcome. Even though I am not christian, i was still appreciative of her spritual strength. Wonderful book for anyone who has battled trust and intimacy issues and have desired to overcome them to heal their relationships, better their take on sex, and truly open up to the one they love.
